How to remove pitting from tile?

QUESTION

How to remove pitting from tile? - Perhaps you can help me. We have just installed a "Tuscan" style porcelain tile floor in our kitchen. We knew that it would have a high color variation; however, we did not realize that there would be a large amount of what I believe is called "pitting" (irregular white striping that gives the appearance of scratches) in many of the tiles and do not care for that look. Is there anything that can be done to color over or tone down those parts of the tiles? Your advice would be very much appreciated.

ANSWER

ANSWER - I assume you have a glazed porcelain tile.  The name Tuscan suggest that it is suppose to have a somewhat rustic look.  Sometimes tiles are manufactured in a way to give them a distressed look to some degree.   The tile supplier should have had a display or photos that shows the range of visual characteristics of the tile.
If in fact it is a glazed porcelain tile there isn't any way for you to alter its appearance in a way that wouldn't compromise some of the benefits of those types of tile.  If it is an unglazed porcelain tile, then you can grind and polish them like a stone and they can be altered to some degree.  Good Luck.

I have lived in a rented apartment for 15 yrs, I love it. I have light colored tile on my kitchen floors and matching counter top. It is starting to get pitted more on the counter. What can I do to stop it and/or fix it.
I don’t want to get the landlord involved. I have been fixing small things without calling him. Thanks

Chances are you have a glazed ceramic tile on your kitchen countertop. If the glaze pits there isn’t much you can do about it other than if it is showing a contrasting color from the body of the tile, you can get a matching epoxy paint and paint the spots, which is a temporary repair. Otherwise it is time to replace the countertop.
