SUMMARY OF MAJOR FINDINGS
Ceramic and stone tile sales trended downward since 2022 led by a drop in homeowner purchases as rising mortgage rates caused a sharp drop in existing home sales and the resulting decline in kitchen and bathroom renovation work. Ceramic tile, however, outpaced stone tile sales in square feet due to stronger gains in stone tile prices. Ceramic tile sales also benefited as manufacturers expanded their use of digital and 3D printing technologies, which offer more realistic wood and stone designs. Meanwhile, ceramic tile prices became more competitive as sourcing shifted to lower-cost suppliers located in Mexico, India, Brazil, and Vietnam. However, imports from higher cost suppliers in Italy and Spain continue to lead foreign sourcing. In any case, U.S.-Made ceramic tile gained market share since U.S.- and foreign-based competitors invested in domestic production capacity. U.S.-based suppliers could gain additional share during 2026 as demand begins to recover since mortgage rates are estimated to drop below 6.0% by the end of the year. This indicates consumer and builder markets will lead a rebound.
