How to remove an oil stain from stone?

QUESTION

How to remove an oil stain from stone? - Hi I wonder if you can help me. I was staining a trunk with red oak stain and some accidentally spilled (large blotch) on my stone patio tiles. I tried to apply wet towel and scrub but it didn't do much too clean the stone tile. The stain is a oil based stain...not really sure what kind of stone tile. I can send pictures if that would help. Any feedback or direction would be great.

ANSWER

ANSWER - If the red oak stain is an oil based stain then water by itself will not breakdown the stain.  Normally for oil-based stains you need to make a poultice with baking soda and water or use one of the powdered poultice materials from one of the stone suppliers. and then add mineral spirits or a commercial degreaser.
Some stones are more absorbing than others so the more porous stones are more susceptible to staining.  That is why you should seal your stone with a penetrating breathable sealer for maximum protection.  Here a list of manufacturers who produce cleaners and sealers .

Always test out what you plan on using to clean the stone because it could cause it to become worst.  Good luck.
