Why is Water Coming Through Ceramic Tile Grout Joints?

QUESTION

Why is water coming up through my Ceramic Tile Grout Joints? I am interested in speaking to someone about a problem that I have had for over 8 years with moisture in my den floor. I removed wood floors and replaced with ceramic tile and now have water seeping through the grout lines. I live in Louisiana.

ANSWER

ANSWER - I assume that the tile is installed on a concrete slab that is the bottom floor either on ground level or below ground level.  If water is coming up through the grout joints then you either have a high water table causing some degree of hydrostatic pressure, or you have a landscape problem where water from rain or from watering is allowed to drain towards the house.
If it is a high water table, which Louisiana is known for, or an improper slope in the landscaping, then you have to build French drains around the house so the water diverted away from the house.

It is a good thing that you do have ceramic tile since it isn't moisture sensitive like wood floors.  Although ceramic tile is limited in how much hydrostatic water pressure it can take before it starts debonding.
