How to make Polished Porcelain Tiles more Glossy?

QUESTION

How to make Polished Porcelain Tiles more Glossy? - Our high gloss procelain tiles installed approx 1 yr ago from Costco are never able to reflect a clean mirror type finish regardless of how many different products & procedures we've tried. This tile came with a wax finish, which Costco agreed to have removed. In addition, this tile's instructions warn that these tiles are not to be sealed. I look forward to hearing from you!

ANSWER

ANSWER - I understand that the glossy porcelain tiles you had installed in your home isn't as reflective of a surface as you expected and you haven't been successful at treating it to achieve this glossy look.

First it depends on whether this tile that you received came in that expected condition or not, and whether during the installation process it became dull. It also depends on whether you have glazed surface (glass like coating fired on surface during manufacturing) to the tile or if it is a polished surface (polished with diamond pads after the tile was manufactured).

If it lost it's glossy appearance during the installation process then it may have been subjected to an acidic cleaner that etched the surface. If the tile is polished then it can be repolished to bring back the polish appearance. If it is a glazed surface then you can't restore that glossy appearance. If it never had the glossy appearance when received then you can possibly repolish it to make it more glossy. If it is a glazed surface you won't be able to alter the look unless you put some type of coating on it to achieve a shine, which becomes a maintenance challenge. You might get traffic patterns from wear and you will have to maintain the surface coating.

Keep in mind that the more glossy the surface the more slippery it will be when wet or when wearing certain types of shoes, but it is generally easier to maintain. Where the textured surfaces are more slip resistant, but more effort in maintaining.

If you have a polished porcelain tile you should contact a stone restoration company to repolish it for you. Good Luck

Glazed tiles cannot be polished. The glazed surface is a glass-like material that tends to scratch if you abrade it with polishing disks.

depends on what you mean by using polish on porcelain tiles.

You can polish a porcelain tile before it is installed. Theoretically you could polish a polished porcelain tile after it is installed, but it could be difficult if it was an unpolished unglazed porcelain tile.

In terms of can you coat the unglazed porcelain tile with something to make it shiny, it is possible to apply an enhancer sealer to give it more of wet look, but it may not last long. You can use wax and polish the tile, but it requires a lot of maintenance to maintain it over time.

Can you buff surface scratches from digitally printed polished porcelain tile? We have Verona Greige II Polished porcelain tile from Floor & Decor.

    • Donato Pompo says:

Through body/unglazed porcelain tiles can be polished or repolished.

If it is glazed porcelain tile then you can not polish it. The digitally printed tiles are printing a glaze over the porcelain tile body so you can’t polish them either.
