Can the Legs to Our Granite Counter Be Replaced Without Damaging the Granite?

QUESTION

Can the legs to our Granite Counter be replaced without damaging the Granite? Our kitchen table is a granite slab inserted into the wall at one end and supported by a metal leg with a 4-1/2" x 4-1/2" flat metal brace at its top at the other end. The brace is glued to the bottom of the granite. We wish to remove the leg and replace it with two similar legs at other places under the granite. The contractor who we are using to do the job is afraid that the granite might be damaged in removing the leg (he intends to use a heat gun to remove the glue). Is there a likelihood that the granite will be damaged in removing the leg? Also, can you give me any advice as to the best way to separate the leg from the granite so as to not to damage the granite? Thank you for your help.

ANSWER

ANSWER - Any time you adjust something there is always a chance that something will get damaged.  I think any stone countertop installer would make that disclaimer just in case something goes wrong.
I would install the new legs first before removing the old legs if that is possible.  That way the countertop should remain stable as you remove the old legs.  Using a heat gun to soft the glue seems like a reasonable approach.  There are no guarantees, but it seems reasonable that it can be done without damage to the granite top.
