Can I install mosaic tiles over flagstone? I have flagstone under my pagoda in my back yard. Is it possible to get a good outcome on doing my own mosaic over it with glass or ceramic pieces? If so what would you recommend?ANSWER
ANSWER - Flagstone is a shape and not a specific type of stone. It can be a sandstone, granite, slate or ?Regardless, if the stone is properly installed and structurally sound then you could install a mosaic over it. You would have to grind the flagstone flat or scarify it and adjust it with a patching mortar.

The Flagstone term just represents an irregular shape. The geological classification of the stone could be sandstone, quartzite, bluestone, granite, marble, etc.
In theory of the flagstone stile is adequately bonded to a structurally sound substrate, you can bond another tile to it if you scarify the flagstone surface and use an appropriate polymer modified thinset mortar adhesive.
