Tile Tips

2022 is a wrap. And once again, we have the pleasure of looking back on the tile tips and trends we’ve covered over the last year.

As in years past, we’ve shared ideas on using tile in every room of the house. But one room stands out this year for being of particular interest to designers and homeowners alike: the bathroom.

Whether you’re designing a new home or remodeling your existing space, our 2022 tips can help you create the bathroom you’ve been dreaming of in the new year.

Bathroom Tile Trends

Ribbons and slats (long skinny tiles), large-format wall tiles, and tile that continues into the shower are all current bathroom tile trends.

Let’s start with the bathroom tile design trends that emerged in 2022 and will be going strong for 2023. As we reported in our blog post, homeowners’ underlying motivation was to create a space that was uniquely their own — not basic, and not merely functional.

As a result, we saw the following bathroom tile trends take off:

So, when planning your new bathroom, these trends are a great place to start.

Bathroom Color Trends

Soothing blue tile continues to be popular for bathrooms because of its ability to promote relaxation and wellness.

When it comes to colors, 2022 presented hues ranging from soothing to striking, including:

These colors are representative of society’s continuing desire to reconnect with nature.

Pro tip: You don’t need to limit yourself to a single color for your new bathroom. Consider combining two or more of the trending colors, such as cozy earth tones accented by soft greens, or black tile with jewel tone accents.

Vintage Tile Bathroom Ideas

Penny round tile’s popularity has lasted since the early 20th century.

Vintage bathroom tile also made a comeback with designs that combine tile’s timeless style and modern functionality. Our blog post on Vintage Tile Bathroom Ideas shares some of our favorite options, including penny round tilesubway tilecheckerboard tile and hexagon tile.

Of course, the story wouldn’t be complete without a look at the role color plays in vintage bathroom tile as well. Green, blue, pink, yellow, black and white, and brown top the list of retro hues on the rise.

Note: Certain tile designs — such as penny round tile, checkerboard tile, green tile, and blue tile — earned multiple blog mentions in 2022. Now that’s what we call trending.

Bathroom Backsplash Ideas

A bold backsplash tile design may be all the decor your new bathroom needs.

Of course, it’s not all about the tile design that you choose, but also where you put it. Backsplashes offer an opportunity to create a design focal point and/or to coordinate other bathroom elements.

Backsplash tile can set the tone for your whole bathroom. And while it may feel like more of a design “extra” than a must-have compared to floor and shower tile, it actually pulls double duty protecting your wall from water damage and creating a hygieniceasy-to-clean surface.

So, check out our recent blog post on backsplash tile to spark your imagination. It includes a whopping 81 ideas, so we think you’ll find something you like.
