How do I make my Mat Ceramic Tile Easier to Clean in a Shower?

QUESTION

How do I make my Mat Ceramic Tile Easier to Clean in a Shower - i put 12" matte ceramic tile on the walls of my shower and they are very hard to clean, is there a sealer i can put on the tile to make cleaning easier?

ANSWER

ANSWER - I don't know if you have a mat glazed or unglazed ceramic tile on your shower walls, but either way, you can apply a penetrating sealer on the tile surface, which will act as a bond breaker so dirt doesn't as readily adhere to it, and it should make the tile easier to clean.
I assume the tile is impervious either because it is a glazed surface tile or it is an unglazed porcelain tile.  The sealer doesn't really penetrate into these impervious surfaces, but it does coat them.  It is important that you use a sealer that is recommended for this application and when you apply it that you immediately wipe the tile dry with a dry lint free cloth before the sealer dries, or otherwise you can have sticky surface problem.  One sealer that I think is recommended for this application is Miracle 511 Impregnator.  It shouldn't make much of a change in the appearance of the tile.  You can find a link to their website on our webpage at /.docs/pg/324.  You will need to reapply the sealer at least once a year or to a point when water stops beading up on the surface of the tile.  Be sure to test the sealer out first to make sure it meets your satisfaction.
