Can I stucco over ceramic tile?

QUESTION

Installing over Existing Tile - IN MY KITCHEN WE HAVE THE WORST LOOKIN TILE ON THE WALLS EVER HOW COULD I STUCCO OVER IT OR CAN IT BE DONE I WAS TOLD THAT I COULD USE STUCCO AND PAINT OVER IT WILL THIS WORK ?? OR WILL IT BE A NIGHTMARE? THANKS FOR ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE.

ANSWER

ANSWER - In theory you can stucco over ceramic tile, but the conditions have to be correct and you have to prepare the tile in a special way.

First, you have to be sure that the tile is well attached and structurally sound to support the added layer.

Stucco does not have much cement in it and is fairly weak, so you can not apply it directly to the ceramic tile.

The ceramic tile needs to be scarified and a skim coat of a latex/polymer modified thin-set would then need to be applied.  Then you can apply a stucco finish over the thin-set.  Then you can paint it if you wish.

In stead of the stucco, you can thin-set new ceramic tile or stone to the existing tile after properly preparing the tile as described above.  Good Luck!

If they are concrete stairs with tile adhered to them, then if the concrete substrate is in good condition, then remove the tiles and reinstall new tiles. If the concrete substrate is unstable, then replace or repair it, and then install the new tile over it.

        Hi!
I’m exhausted from hours of research!
I want to paint a stable bathroom ceramic tile floor. I want no ghosting of grout lines. Was going to prime, fiber mesh, cement, epoxy prime, epoxy paint, seal several times. So many products!!!
Should I do a latex compound, mesh and prime? I called Ardex and they didn’t want to recommend anything!

I understand that you want to paint your existing tile floor and you want a uniform look and don’t want the grout lines to stand out.

What you want to do there is no standard for doing. The tile industry would never recommend doing that. I suspect the paint industry wouldn’t recommend it either unless you put an underlayment layer down over the scarified tile surface or if you apply an epoxy coated system. So whatever you do is experimental at your own risk unless there is a manufacturer providing you with recommendations with a warranty.
