Can Floor Tiles Be Installed On Walls?

QUESTION

Can floor tiles be installed on walls? - I have a question regarding a job I am contracting for. I want to install porcelain tile that is for floors on to walls. Is that ok to do?

ANSWER

ANSWER - All floor tiles can be used on walls.  But not all walls tiles can be used on floors.  The shear bond strength of the thin-set mortar that you use to bond the tile to its substrate should be at least 50 psi and is likely much higher.  So if the floor tile is installed correctly over a suitable substrate it should be safely attached.
