Will painting grout with acrylic latex paint work?

QUESTION

Changing the Grout Color - I want to change the color of my grout in my kitchen. I was told to paint it with acrylic latex paint, will this work? Is Hi-gloss ok to use?

ANSWER

ANSWER - You should not use a latex paint over your existing grout joints, because it won't provide adequate coverage over the existing color, nor will it last.

There are special products called "Grout Colorants" made for painting over grout joints that are epoxy based. There are several manufacturers of these products who match the colors of cement grouts for ceramic tile and stone. You can go to the Cleaner and Sealers section under Resources in Expert Answers for a list of some of the manufacturers. Aqua Mix Grout Colorant is one of the better known products available.

Be sure to follow their instructions of fully cleaning the grout joints before applying. Good Luck!

I just spent several hours painting my grout in my bathroom tile with Behr premium ultra paint and primer and now I see not to paint grout with latex. Now what??? I am NOT going to take it all off and it looks great!!!! Can I simp,y seal the grout now??? Thanks

As long as the latex paint is working and doesn’t peel or wear a way then it is all good. The paint should act as a sealer so probably no value in sealing over the paint. In fact, depending on the sealer it might affect the paint.

    • Donato Pompo says:

The grout colorants are epoxy based and will last longer, but it will only perform as well as the latex paint it is attached to. So probably best not to use the colorant over the paint.

I want to paint the grout on my kitchen floor. Where can I get Epoxy paint and what should I ask for?

    • Donato Pompo says:

Most grout manufacturers have epoxy grout colorants (epoxy paint) that matches their grout. You can buy at tile distributors or at home centers.

I ground the discolored grout in my kitchen out, down to the original color. My question is ” Do I have to seal it before I use a colored grout paint or will the colored grout paint work as a sealer? I bought “Mapei UltraCare Grout Refresh”

    • Donato Pompo says:

According to the Mapei website they say:
UltraCare Grout Refresh is a nonflammable, ready-to-use, water-based, polymer-modified colorant and sealer for grout joints. It can be applied onto and bonds to cement, epoxy, urethane and acrylic grouts.

    • Donato Pompo says:

It depends on what type of ceramic tile that you have. Porcelain ceramic tiles are impervious with a low absorption so it won’t absorb much, but the grout joint will absorb the sealer.

Penetrating sealers tend to not change the look of the tile. There are different sealers for different types of tile. You can go to the CTaSC Resource page for cleaners and sealers to see some of the companies who offer them that link to their websites: https://ctasc.com/category/resources/cleaners-sealers/

I mistakenly let the tiles use dove Grey grout between my wall tiles which is a darker Grey than I wanted, which is a light Grey colour. If I use a tile grout tint, is it possible to get the grout lighter. I am not keen to “De-grout, as my spacing is very small, so I am concerned the tiles get chipped or damaged if doing this.
Or is there any other way to do it, please?

    • Donato Pompo says:

There are grout colorants that can be used on cementitious grouts that can change the color to a different color. They are an epoxy paint. It would not be easy to paint narrow grout joints.
