How do I paint over Cracks in my Ceramic Tile in my Shower?

QUESTION

How do I paint over Cracks in my Ceramic Tile in my Shower? - I have glazed tile in my bathroom. It has a large number of cracks, and I would like to paint it, however, my handy man cannot find a paint that will hold up, since the tile is also in the shower.
Can you help me?

ANSWER

ANSWER - First of all, if you have cracked tiles that suggests that there is an underlying problem.  Cracks in the shower can lead to leaks in areas that could cause other water damages within or adjacent to the shower.

If it isn't practical to investigate these cracks and you are only interested in aesthetically covering them up, then you can apply a paintable silicone or urethane sealant to fill the voids in the crack and then after it dries a few days later paint it with an epoxy based paint.

This process is a what we call a band-aid process that doesn't correct the cause of the problem and will only last so long.  The correct repair would be to remove the cracked tiles and fix the problem that caused them to crack.
