Can I use Polyurethane for a Sealer?

QUESTION

Using Polyurethane for a Sealer - I have 30-year-old kitchen counter tile that is in good shape but dulled. Can I put clear polyurethane on it?

ANSWER

ANSWER - Putting polyurethane coatings over tile is not something that is normally done or recommended.  It might work, but I'm not sure how it would last or if it is healthy to prepare food on such a surface.

Glazed Ceramic Tile doesn't normally get dull unless the surface is excessively worn, and then I would not expect it to be uniformly dull.  So I'm not sure if you have a glazed or unglazed tile on your counter.  An unglazed tile might be sealed and it may have dulled over time and use.  If it is an unglazed tile then you could apply a sealer enhancer over it to make it more shiny.

I assume you are saying that you had a tile mural made of a grape vine for your kitchen backsplash. Normally tile murals are fired on glazed tiles so they should be pealing. Perhaps you have something else where they applied some sort of surface sealer over it. There are strippers that will remove sealers, but it could also damage the underlying material depending on what it is made of.
