Alcohol Stains from bottoms of glasses on black granite

QUESTION

Alcohol Stains - We have spots from bottoms of glasses on black galaxy granite counter top. Suspect it is vodka or scotch stains. Help please.

ANSWER

ANSWER - The spots from the alcohol glasses are etching the polished surface of the stone caused by the acidic nature of the alcohol. Some polished stone is more sensitive to this than others. This too can occur on some softer glazed ceramic tile surfaces.

The etch marks can be removed by re-polishing the surface after the spots have been completely cleaned removing any accompanied stains from the alcohol. You may need the help of a professional stone refinisher.

These stains can be minimized or avoided by sealing the stone, using glass coasters, and cleaning surfaces with spills and residues right away. Good Luck!
