Spanish Ceramic Imports to U.S. Hit Record Level in July

New York, NY, September 9, 2022 – In the month of July, Spain exported to the U.S. a record amount of tiles: 4.7 million square meters, according to D. Grosser Consulting.

In second place was India (3.2 million square meters) and then Italy (3.0 million square meters), Mexico (2.9 million square meters), Turkey (2.6 million square meters) and Brazil (2.2 million square meters). Total imports for the month were 20.2 million square meters, a record for the year.

For the period of January to July 2022, Spain was in first place with 24.8 million square meters, followed by Italy (20.0 million square meters), Mexico (18.9 million square meters), Turkey (15.1 million square meters), India (14.8 million square meters), and Brazil (12.6 million square meters).

F.O.B. Dollar values were as follows: Italy, $390 million; Spain, $321 million; Mexico, $144 million; Turkey, $114 million; India, $84 million; and Brazil, $80 million.

Compared to the previous year for the period of January to July, total imports in square meters were down by 1.4%. India was up by 19.6%, and Brazil was up by 2.5%. Spain was down by 4.9%. Italy was down by 2.7%. Mexico was down by 8.6%. Turkey was down by 1.2%.

It is important to note the increasing cost of distribution: F.O.B. value of imports from Spain was $321 million, while landed cost ( F.O.B. cost plus transportation, insurance and U.S. duties) was $471 million. Transportation, insurance and U.S. duties of such imports accounted for $150 million, almost half the cost of the goods.

Italy: F.O.B value of imports was $390 million; landed cost was $494 million.

Mexico: F.O.B value of imports was $143 million; landed cost was $152 million (virtually all imports are by land).

Turkey: F.O.B. value of imports was $114 million; landed cost was $150 million.

India: F.O.B. value of imports was $84 million; landed cost was $139 million.

Brazil: F.O.B. value of imports was $80 million; landed cost was 111 million.
