By Kristin Coleman

At the 2023 edition of Coverings, the largest international ceramic tile event in North America, over 60 premier Italian brands showcased their latest tile and installation products to the market in the Ceramics of Italy Pavilion. Demonstrating the versatility and beauty of Italian tile, the following trends summarize this season’s top trends in color, design and application.

Eclectic

The concept of eclecticism involves the ability to draw inspiration from multiple sources and styles. As natural storytellers with hi-tech capabilities, Italian manufacturers are creating novel forms of decorative expression in tile, whether it’s the fusion of vintage and modern or a mixture of materials on digitally printed porcelain.

The Great Outdoors

The past few years have produced a ubiquitous need for people to connect with nature – not only at home, but at work, hotels, healthcare facilities and even offices. This, in turn, has created an explosion in outdoors spaces, which is where Italian tile comes in. Unlike other materials that can crack, warp and fade, porcelain tile is a workhorse that can withstand the elements. It’s frost-free, water and heat resistant, low maintenance and offers incredible anti-slip finishes. Catering to this new era of outdoor living, Italian tile producers offer a plethora of solutions for residential and commercial projects from 2- and 3-cm pavers and gauged porcelain panels for exterior cladding to pedestal systems and even induction cooktops for outdoor kitchens.

Marine Life

While green dominated last season’s palette, marine hues have emerged as spring-summer’s top color choice in ceramic tile. From the deep blues of the sea to the bright blue and green shallow waters of island shores, a wide spectrum of blue and green ceramic tiles are available from Italian companies and can add an energizing element to any space.

Artisanal

As homeowners and brands look to personalize their spaces, handmade finishes are in high demand across residential, retail and hospitality design. Although most of today’s tile collections are commercially produced, Italian manufacturers are able to recreate the look of surfaces shaped by time and the hands of skilled craftspeople. From time-worn materials and hand-chiseled stone to three-dimensional surfaces inspired by plaster-making techniques and luxurious, hand-finished gold detailing, these new collections add an artisanal touch to floors and walls.
