Year-to-Date Ceramic Imports Down 0.8% in Square Meters

New York, NY, October 7, 2022 – Compared to the previous year for the period from January to August, total ceramic imports in square meters were down by 0.8%, according to Grosser Consulting.

India was up by 21%, and Brazil was up by 5.8%. Spain was down by 2.5%, Italy was down by 0.8%, Mexico was down by 5.6%, and Turkey was down by 0.7%.

In the month of August, Spain exported to the U.S. a record amount of tile: 4.8 million square meters.

In second place was Italy (4.1 million square meters), then Mexico (3.2. million square meters), Turkey (2.7 million square meters), India (2.5 million square meters) and Brazil (1.9 million square meters). Total imports for the month were 21.2 million square meters, a record for the year.

For the period from January to August, Spain is in first place with 29.6 million square meters, followed by Italy (24.1 million square meters), Mexico (22 million square meters), Turkey (17.9 million square meters), India (17.3 million square meters), and Brazil (14.5 million square meters).

F.O.B. Dollar values were as follows: Italy $475 million, Spain $390 million, Mexico $166 million, Turkey $138 million, India $99 million, and Brazil $94 million.

Costs of distribution are still very high and make up a large percentage of landed costs (those paid by importers)

F.O.B. value of imports from Spain was $390 million, while landed cost (F.O.B. cost plus transportation, insurance and U.S. suties) was $572 million. Transportation, insurance and U.S. duties of such imports accounted for $182 million, almost half the cost of the goods.

Italy: F.O.B value of imports was $576 million; landed cost $603 million.

Mexico: F.O.B value of imports was $166 million; landed cost $176 million (virtually all imports are by land)

Turkey: F.O.B. value of imports was $138 million; landed cost $183 million.

India: F.O.B. value of imports was $99 million; landed cost was $164 million.

Brazil: F.O.B. value of imports was $94 million; landed cost was 130 million.
