About You Get What You Pay For
“How much does your tile cost?”- There seems to be an infinite amount of choices when it comes to ceramic tile, porcelain tile, and natural stone products available and more are being brought to the marketplace almost everyday. Among this vast almost dizzying amount to choose from, there are products on both ends of the cost scale. As this cartoon suggests, the product’s price can be an indicator of it’s performance and manufacturing properties.
Don’t take chances on ceramic and porcelain tiles that are not thoroughly vetted with documentation that proves it has passed all applicable ANSI A137.1 standards for its classification. Natural stone has its own challenges and surprises. A stone should be suitable for its intended use and often times they are not but are misrepresented as such. All stone classifications have ASTM testing properties and minimum values that much be achieved for each. When in doubt, consult with experts that have the experience and can have stone samples tested to assure its suitability.
Be careful, as you just might get what you pay for!
About the Tilewise Cartoons
TileWise cartoons were developed under Donato Pompo's leadership for Club '84
(Ceramic Tile Action Group). Club '84 was a non-profit organization
of accomplished individuals from all segments of the ceramic tile
industry. The group's mission was to develop and distribute educational aids to
educate, train and bring quality awareness to the distributors, specifiers, installers,
and consumers of Ceramic Tile.
The TileWise cartoons were created to communicate issuses and concerns in the
business of using ceramic tile for all segments of the industry. The objective
was to educate to promote the quality use of ceramic tile. In each cartoon the
screen exaggerates what you shouldn't do or emphasizes an issue or concern, then George
the Bucket (named after CTI founder George Lavenberg) says what is correct. The
cartoons ran for twelve years in each issue of the Tile Industry News, a major industry
publication, published by the Ceramic Tile Institute until 1999 when it
