About Importance of Lighting

Lighting can have a huge impact on the way a tile will appear when installed inside or outside your home. For example, warm lighting tends to give more of a yellow cast, whereas cool lighting gives more of a blue cast. You can also find light bulbs that mimic natural lighting, which helps tile products to look more natural. If lighting is placed adjacent to a wall, it can give what is called a “wall wash affect”. This can cause a kind of illusion that makes ceramic tiles seem to have excessive lippage (when they do not).

As a salesperson or an installer, it’s important to make your customers aware of these variations caused by different sources and placement of lighting. Some showrooms have lighting boxes, where customers can put their tile selections under a variety of light types to get an idea of how the tile would look if installed in a room with the same lighting. If you don’t warn your clients about how lighting affects tile installations, then they may have false expectations, resulting in disappointed and unhappy customers. Another unwanted result may be that the tile color no longer matches other finishes that were selected based on the expected tile color. This becomes a costly problem to have to change other materials affected by the tile color. Remember, when there is a problem, it doesn’t matter who is at fault, everyone loses either in time, money or reputation. So, it’s in the best interest of your company to make sure your clients understand how lighting can affect their tile selections!

About the Tilewise Cartoons

TileWise cartoons were developed under Donato Pompo's leadership for Club '84 (Ceramic Tile Action Group).  Club '84 was a non-profit organization of accomplished individuals from all segments of the ceramic tile industry.  The group's mission was to develop and distribute educational aids to educate, train and bring quality awareness to the distributors, specifiers, installers, and consumers of Ceramic Tile.

The TileWise cartoons were created to communicate issuses and concerns in the business of using ceramic tile for all segments of the industry.  The objective was to educate to promote the quality use of ceramic tile.  In each cartoon the screen exaggerates what you shouldn't do or emphasizes an issue or concern, then George the Bucket (named after CTI founder George Lavenberg) says what is correct.  The cartoons ran for twelve years in each issue of the Tile Industry News, a major industry publication, published by the Ceramic Tile Institute until 1999 when it ceased.

Use these cartoons to educate your customers and employees to help avoid potential problems, and to promote a positive image of your company through newsletters, posters or mailings.

We hope you can put these cartoons to good use to help your industry and your business, and we know you will certainly benefit from them if you do.  Good Luck!
