How long should the concrete cure before I install carpet over it?

QUESTION

I just had all my drainage pipes replaced in my basement. The plumbers are pouring cement into the trenches they dug today. How long do I need to leave the cement before I can put carpet down? The trenches are a couple of feet wide and about 7 feet long. I had the carpet scheduled for last week and found out I had to do this work the evening before they were to come. The carpet store is eager to get it in here as it’s been sitting in their showroom for a week now.

ANSWER

ANSWER - Generally speaking they say that it takes 28 days for a concrete slab to cure under favorable climatic conditions.  If the concrete is not as thick and the temperatures are higher with the humidity is lower then it can cure sooner.

Depending on the type of carpet the manufacturer may have different requirements as some are more moisture sensitive than others.  Obtain a data sheet from the carpet manufacturer and see what they recommend.
